The human experience is full of unpredictability and paradox, joys and sorrows, successes and failures. We can’t escape any of these experiences in the vast terrain of our existence. It is part of what makes life grand—and it is also why our minds take us on such a crazy ride. If we can train ourselves through meditation to be more open and more accepting toward the wild arc of our experience, if we can lean into the difficulties of life and ride of our minds, we can become more settled and relaxed amid whatever life brings us.There are numerous ways to work with the mind. One of the most effective ways is through the tool of sitting meditation. Sitting meditation opens us to each and every moment of our life. Each moment is totally unique and unknown. Our mental world is seemingly predictable and graspable. We believe that thinking through all the events and to-dos of our life will provide us with ground and security. But it’s all a fantasy, and this very moment, free of conceptual overlay, is completely unique. It is absolutely unknown. We’ve never experienced this very moment before, and the next moment will not be the same as the one we are in now. Meditation teaches us how to relate to life directly, so that we can truly experience the present moment, free from conceptual overlay.Book Meditation: How to Meditate: A Practical Guide to Making Friends with Your Mind Review :
I have been a student trying to learn how to meditate for over four decades. Pema Chödrön, one of the best and clearest teachers of spiritual practice alive today, has given me a gift in this book that makes more sense of stuff I've struggled with than any other book in the field. She practices and teaches Tibetan Buddhism, but is liberally accessible to persons, like me, who come from and follow other spiritual traditions. I cannot imagine that her book would not be helpful to anyone who wishes to get a firmer grasp, both intellectually and experientially, on meditation. Not sure why I was drawn to this particular book as my first thought when I look at the title is "I already know how to meditate", but I'm sure I was looking for another Pema Chodron book to read after finishing "Taking The Leap", so this was the one I went to. Great book, love her writing, I'll be looking for another one to add to the on deck circle as soon as I finish this review.I went back and forth on 4/5 star rating for this book before settling on four stars, mainly because some of the early parts moved slow for me, I left it and read another book before coming back and finishing this one - and that alone doesn't say "five star read" to me. But the last parts of this book are very good. The entire book is a great read, I probably picked it because I've been neglecting my meditation practice for quite some time now and would like to get back into it. Certainly reading this book is motivational to do just that.I don't like using guided imagery for meditation, and wouldn't like a book that gives you "meditation exercises" to follow, either. There are exercises included in parts of this book, but that's not the main gist of it. This book is more about where to take yourself, what techniques to use, what personal gain can be attained when adding meditation to your life. It found me when I needed it. If you've read this far, read it yourself because it found you as well... and it's a very good book.
