Ebook About
Why is it that so many efforts by liberals to lift the black underclass not only fail, but often harm the intended beneficiaries? In Please Stop Helping Us, Jason L. Riley examines how well-intentioned welfare programs are in fact holding black Americans back. Minimum-wage laws may lift earnings for people who are already employed, but they price a disproportionate number of blacks out of the labor force. Affirmative action in higher education is intended to address past discrimination, but the result is fewer black college graduates than would otherwise exist. And so it goes with everything from soft-on-crime laws, which make black neighborhoods more dangerous, to policies that limit school choice out of a mistaken belief that charter schools and voucher programs harm the traditional public schools that most low-income students attend. In theory these efforts are intended to help the poor—and poor minorities in particular. In practice they become massive barriers to moving forward. Please Stop Helping Us lays bare these counterproductive results. People of goodwill want to see more black socioeconomic advancement, but in too many instances the current methods and approaches aren’t working. Acknowledging this is an important first step.

Book Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed Review :

I was rather concerned when it was suggested I read this book. Many times any book that includes the words "liberal" or "conservative" is just trashing the other side. He doesn't trash anyone. The only reason one political party is being addressed is because that's where these policies originated. He's been quite even handed and does state that these policies start out well meaning. As I read further I really wanted to question his conclusions, except his points don't just fit one group. I found a lot of his points are pretty relevant to the poor underclass (which I grew up in) no matter what color you are. I also found many of his points about these policies also are applicable to other movements. Feminism also went from a "you're strong and can do anything! Go out and show them!" to a more "you're a victim of other people..." mentality. It's something that's always bothered me because why would I identify with any group that told me I was dumber, weaker, or less capable than another group? Yet people across the nation buy into this idea. The more I read, the more I see how this applied among those I grew up with and the more I can believe of what he says. He's only echoing everything I've ever seen. I think this is really a must read and I think it's relevant across racial lines. It's funny, as I was trying to dig myself up out of that life, I frequently have told others that the biggest barrier to my efforts were NOT people telling me to "work for it", but people "helping" me. For years I would tell others who argued with me about how "helpful" these programs were to PLEASE! STOP HELPING!!! It took me at least twice as long (I had a 2 year plan that took 6 years, even accounting for youthful zeal it still shouldn't have taken me more than 3) to work my way up with "help" and had I known that I'd have stayed away from every bit of help I could. Once I saw myself in this book, I knew I was reading the right thing. He's more in touch with at least the poverty class than most I have read and than ANYONE in politics.
This is a well-written critique of the demise of Black culture as most of the people in my generation knew it. We are the ones that look around to find people that are content and complacent about getting an education and employment. They really see what we considered to be the last resort help to be something they are entitled to have. The title of this book grabbed me immediately. It is what I longed to shout to all the well-intentioned White teachers that sought me out to ask how they could teach Black children effectively. It's what I wanted to yell at social workers that bent over backward trying to place children that I fostered back into homes that were dysfunctional. How much help are you going to give them? How much is enough to make the effort to accomplish something that is right in front of you? I'm so grateful for this scholarly yet easy to read book that can help enlighten others to the systematic downward spiral that has become commonly known as Black culture. Every person regardless of race should read it.
